Chinese Medicine and Fertility

At Rescue Acupuncture we have been helping patients in Brunswick and the Northern Suburbs with fertility for over 15 years, with conception, pregnancy and child birth. The practice of acupuncture to assist with fertility has a long rich history, perhaps now even more coming to the forefront because of dwindling birth rates in the modern world. Chinese Medicine also has a strong connection with the entire pregnancy process, from even before conception to the birth.

Gynecological medicine has a significant component within Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. As a result of this, acupuncture and herbal remedies are known to work directly with fertility, conception and pregnancy like few others can. This is true for both the female and the male.

Women’s Health

Acupuncture can assist with fertility, pregnancy. menstrual cycles and sexual health. The healthy females menstrual cycle has several important characteristics that if askew can impact directly on one’s fertility, one’s ability to fall pregnant and carry the child to term. For instance, investigations into the length of cycle, strength of flow, pain, bleeding (outside of the usual cycle), the nature of the vaginal secretions and the ovulation timing can give many insights.

Helping Pregnancy with Acupuncture,

Acupuncture can be a great help during pregnancy for maintaining a healthy body. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause a few uncomfortable issues to arise not the least being a sore back, sleep, urination and bowel movements disrupted and of course anxiety. Morning sickness can arise during pregnancy, acupuncture can be very helpful here. Understanding why some women get morning sickness, Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be a useful assisting tool, keeping the Ki flowing, the fluids moving and the vitality of the mother to be strong.

Acupuncture and Childbirth

Acupuncture practice has developed to assist women with difficult labour in childbirth as much as possible. For instance, acupuncture for breach babies is one such treatment where moxibustion is applied repeatedly to a point on the small toe. This simple treatment can bring about a rapid change in the unborn child’s position within the womb. Still other treatments can help with inducing labour.

Effects of acupuncture on rates of pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing in vitro fertilization: systematic review and meta-analysis.

FINDINGS: This research meta-analysis examining existing high quality acupuncture research on acupuncture and IVF.  The authors found that “acupuncture increased the odds of a live birth by 91% compared with the control groups”. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18258932

Influence of acupuncture on the pregnancy rate in patients who undergo assisted reproduction therapy

FINDINGS: This landmark study, was published in a prestigious reproductive medicine journal.  The study found that women receiving acupuncture treatment in conjunction with ART had an increase in ongoing pregnancy rates of over 60% compared to control subjects. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11937123

A randomized, controlled, double-blind, cross-over study evaluating acupuncture as an adjunct to IVF

FINDINGS: This study showed a significantly lower amount of gonadotropins used when IVF is combined with standard acupuncture. A 70% pregnancy rate was also achieved with standard acupuncture and IVF, compared to 25% in the control group.

Effect of acupuncture on the outcome of in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection: a randomized, prospective, controlled clinical study

Acupuncture in IVF linked to lower miscarriage and ectopic rates

FINDINGS: The miscarriage rate was almost halved in the acupuncture group, and the ectopic pregnancy rate was significantly lower. Overall the live-birth rate was significantly higher in the acupuncture group than the control group.
